ELN Delivers: Odin Sánchez Released; Replaced His Brother in Captivity
The first peace gesture of ELN in 2017 is the February 2 release of the last political abductee they had in their hands: the former representative to the House, Odín Sánchez Montes de Oca, who in April of this year volunteered to be exchanged for his brother Patrocinio Sánchez, the ex-governor of Chocó who had been kidnapped three years ago. The ELN delivered on the Government’s demands that the insurgents release all the people they held in captivity. Government and ELN had agreed that the release would take place today. Likewise, the Government must release two ELN guerrillas who are serving sentences for rebellion.
Now, with this liberation, ELN complies with the demands required to initiate peace talks with ELN, totally suspended on October 27. The negotiation will concentrate on five points. Victims, corruption, citizen participation, poverty, social exclusion and guarantees for the end of the conflict are at the core of negotiations. While less than five months ago the Prosecutor’s Office issued out collective indictments of ELN leadership, today these same individuals are the protagonists of a new chapter in the construction of peace in Colombia.
