Another Community Leader Murdered in Colombia: Alvino Rosero, Killed in La Unión, Putumayo
This past Monday at 1 am, unknown people arrived at the house of the president of the Communal Action Board of La Union, Alvino Rosero, and they assassinated him. This area is one of the country’s where the most illicit crops are planted, and this murder happens amid increases in plantation of coca leaf, the government’s program for crop substitution, and international concern in the war on drugs.
Once they became aware of the crime, the neighbors immediately warned the president of AsoJuntas in the region, Jaxin Oswaldo Solarte Rosero. On Tuesday, through a statement, Solarte broke the news and also said that “the facts surrounding the death are unknown.”
He also said that “communal action is in mourning, one more leader that we lose, our condolences to his relatives for the loss of of a great and esteemed president.” At the moment no further information is known, and the authorities have not said anything about it.
However, according to information from the Presidency of the Republic, Alvenio Rosero appears as the representative of La Unión’s board in a list of social leaders of San Miguel. Putumayo, next to Nariño and Norte de Santander, are the departments of Colombia where coca crops have grown the most, reaching the 188,000 hectares planted at the end of 2016. ¡PACIFISTA!
