Kingston (NY) High School Students Say They Were Influenced by Nobel Peace Summit in Colombia (E)
Kingston High School students who attended the recent 16th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates say the event will influence their endeavors going forward.
Some of the 25 students who attended the summit in early February in Bogota, Colombia, spoke to the Kingston Board of Education at its meeting last week.
“When I go to college next year … based on my experiences in the International Relations Club and Model United Nations, I plan to major in international business with potentially a minor in business law,” said 12th-grader Grace Regan.
Students noted that Bogota was selected for this year’s after Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos negotiated a peace agreement with the guerilla organization FARC, which had been fighting Colombian government forces since 1964. While an initial deal failed in an August 2016 referendum, a revised plan later was approved by Colombian lawmakers.
Students said among the impressive aspects of the peace agreement is that it gives former fighters a future. The Daily Freeman
