Shoot Goals Not Guns: FARC to Field Professional Soccer Teams (S)
After several months of talks, in the context of strengthening the negotiation process between the State and the guerrillas, the foundation Fútbol y Paz Construyendo País and FARC signed a cooperation agreement for the creation of the football team La Paz F.C.
The short term goal is for the team to be able to participate in the second division of Colombian professional soccer, to field a U-20 (under 20) category team to participate in a Youth Super Cup, organized by the Colombian Football Federation (FCF), and a women’s squad competing in the respective professional league.
The document, which El Espectador has read, states that the initiative is part of the project “Education, training and culture for peace and post-conflict, Football and Peace,” in alignment with the objectives of the High Presidential Counseling for Post-Conflict, Human Rights and Security. It has the backing of the Government and the highest leader of FARC, Rodrigo Londoño, aka Timochenko. The alliance is planned for 10 years. It seeks to contact former FARC fighters in the transitional zones to discuss the initiative and achieve community engagement. El Espectador
