Schedule for Laying Down Weapons Remains in Place’, VP Oscar Naranjo; Positive Balance Sheet: 1,140 Fewer Homicides in Areas of FARC Presence in 2016 Than in Previous Years (S)
Vice President Óscar Naranjo, in a discussion with Caracol Radio, talked about several issues that generate uncertainty in the country. One of them is the concern about FARC dissents. On this topic, the general (r) said that the number of dissidents is between 250 and 400, a figure which — according to him — is low compared with other processes in the world.
The vice president revealed that the Government remains on the schedule which calls for 180 days for the abandonment of arms and will not change the deadlines. On the subject of the caches of FARC weapons, he said that they involve a complex operation by the Armed Forces, which are working on that.
As for FARC [political] commercials – which have been criticized on the basis that since they have laid down their weapons yet and should not engage in politics -, he said that they are diverse contents and in which different actors of social life participate. Finally, the vice president discussed some figures of the peace agreement with FARC. He said that the 285 municipalities where FARC has a presence saw a decrease of 1,140 in violent deaths in 2016 as compared to 2015. Caracol Radio
