‘Colombia is a Great Example for Peace in the World’: Donald Trump Receives Juan Manuel Santos (S) presidents of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, and the United States, Donald Trump, held their first diplomatic meeting Thursday at the White House. The session lasted 50 minutes and the Colombian leader was accompanied by some members of his government team. At the end of the meeting, the heads of state gave a joint press conference detailing some conclusions of this meeting.

Trump had anticipated that the discussion with Santos would focus on two specific issues. At the moment of receiving the Colombian president, in Washington, he said, “We have a serious problem with drugs that we must deal with … Very sad thing about Venezuela.”

At the end of the meeting, Trump reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to fight with Colombia to end “the terrible crimes” that stem from drug trafficking and that affect both countries. “I’m very worried about this trend,” he said in reference to the increase in illicit crops in Colombia. “Last year coca cultivation reached record levels,” and he said he hoped President Santos could resolve the problem as soon as possible. Of course, said Trump, “In that struggle we will be fighting together.” Semana
